Sand colic is a particular problem for horses grazing in coastal areas and on dry sandy soil. Horses who are inclined to forage for every scrap of food, and those grazing on poor pastures are at most risk of ingesting significant quantities of sand and soil with every mouthful. An accumulation of sand in the gut will lead to colic symptoms, discomfort and diarrhoea usually being the first signs, followed by rolling, sweating
and a refusal to drink.
As little as 1 spoonful of sand per stool can suggest that a significant amount of sand has accumulated in the gut, which may eventually cause an obstruction.
Sand Gard contains the seed of the herb Plantago Ovata. Otherwise known as Psyllium, the seeds of this plant swell and gelatinise when wet, helping to bulk the food by maintaining water levels in the gut, and keeping an even flow along the intestine, thus helping to sweep the sand along with the food. Also combined with multiple sourced anti-oxidants, Sand Gard helps to maintain a healthy gut environment.
Sand Gard is designed to be fed as a 7 day course every 6 weeks.
