When buying a horse rug, it’s important to make sure that it’s a good fit for your horse. If it doesn’t fit well, it could rub and cause discomfort - as well as being inefficient. To avoid this, make sure that you measure your horse correctly. Some horse rugs have a hood. With most of your horse’s neck being muscle, keeping it warm and dry will also improve circulation and keep them warmer. Look out for different shapes and cuts too. A standard cut will sit in front of the wither and then the neck cut curves down and around to give the straight classic cut neck. What are the different types of horse rug?
Stable Rugs
Stable rugs tend to be padded and are available in different thicknesses and fillings. Their main purpose is to keep your horse warm while in the stables but should not be used outside. They’re not waterproof but are often breathable, holding the perspiration away from the horse’s body and allowing the cooling down process to be more gradual.
Turnout Rugs
You can buy turnout rugs in different styles and thicknesses offering varying degrees of warmth. You can get lightweight rugs for summer, medium-weight rugs for spring and autumn, and there are winter turnout rugs which are thick and for use in the colder months. Turnout rugs are waterproof and keep your horse clean, warm, and dry when out in the field.

Exercise Rugs
Exercise rugs are designed to protect your horse while exercising and are worn when the horse is being ridden. They cover the horse’s body from the front of the saddle providing warmth across the back, loins, and essential organs, which is important for muscle suppleness. A good exercise rug should be breathable and they will often feature reflective strips for added safety. Exercise sheets that are waterproof are usually windproof as well.
Summer Horse Rugs
A summer sheet is useful when the horse is stabled during warmer weather or when travelling to shows, offering protection against dust and flies. They are usually lightweight and made from cotton. Look out for rugs providing protection against harmful UV rays.

How are horse rugs measured?
An ill-fitting rug can do more damage than good so be sure to measure your horse correctly. Horse rugs can be sized in either centimetres, feet or inches, the latter in 3 inch increments. Use a soft tape measure and measure horizontally from the centre of its chest to the end of the rump. This is how measurements are done in the UK, USA and Australia. Bear in mind that Europeans measure horses differently - from the top of a horse just behind the neck to just in front of the tail (from withers to tail).
What’s the right horse rug for winter?
This mainly depends on the condition of your horse – an old horse or pony will need better insulation than a well-conditioned breed. External factors do also play a part – how sheltered is the field that your horse will be spending winter in? Owners will often find that their horse is subjected to a diverse range of temperatures throughout the day. If this is the case, then rug for the median temperature so that your horse is equally well prepared for a sunny winter’s day as well as a bitter night frost.

What is the best type of horse rug for the summer?
When it comes to finding a horse rug for the summer, you will need to look for rugs that increase airflow and protects your horse against harmful UV rays. You’ll also want to look out for horse rugs that offer a defensive layer against flies and biting insects. Cotton horse rugs are great for breathability, providing air circulation and absorbing moisture and sweat. They are naturally soft and comfortable too. Lightweight and breezy, mesh fly sheets will keep insects and flies from biting and bothering your horse and are a cooler option in hot weather.
A summer horse rug will provide protection against the sun and insects, but it is not a substitute for proper shelter. So, as well as a suitable horse rug, it's important to ensure your horse has plenty of shade and shelter during the hot summer months. Your horse could become very stressed if it cannot escape the heat of the direct sun. Horses can drink up to 50 litres of water per day in hotter weather, so a constant supply of fresh, clean water is also essential to help prevent dehydration. Buckets of water in the stable can get warm if left to stand for too long, so change them regularly to keep them fresh.
What is the best type of lightweight horse rug?
Horse rugs come in a variety of ‘weights’ (200g, for example) and the weight refer to its filling measured in grams per square metre (GSM). It could range from 0g (perhaps a rain sheet with no fill at all) to over 400g for turnouts suited to extreme weather. The polyester fluff filling generates warmth by capturing pockets of air, in much the same way as a sleeping bag. If you’re looking for a lightweight horse rug, the weight you choose will depend on several factors, including the type of horse you have, its coat, his age, his weight, workload, and general health. But as a rule, if you are looking for a lightweight horse rug, look for something between 0g and 200g.
